What is the definition of Continuing Education for Psychologists?

Continuing education (CE) in psychology is an ongoing process consisting of formal learning activities that:

  • Are relevant to psychological practice, education and science.
  • Enable psychologists to keep pace with the most current scientific evidence regarding assessment, intervention and education as well as important legal, statutory or regulatory issues.
  • Allow psychologists to maintain, develop and increase competencies in order to improve services to the public and enhance contributions to the profession.

Continuing education builds upon a completed doctoral program in psychology. It is not a substitute for the basic academic education and training needed for entry to the field of psychology, nor should it be the primary vehicle for career changes from one APA-recognized specialty area (e.g., clinical, counseling, school psychology) to another.

What is the difference between CE credits and CE units?
  • For CE credits, 1 hour = 1 credit. This is the system used by APA and all APA-approved sponsors.
  • For CE units, 10 hours = 1 credit.

What is the difference between convention CE workshops and CE sessions (unlimited)?

CE workshops are 4- and 7-hours in-depth workshops. CE workshops are priced separately from convention registration and the unlimited CE session fee. Individuals can enroll and attend CE workshops without registering for the APA convention. Full attendance at each CE workshop is required to receive CE credits. No partial credit is awarded.

CE sessions are 1- or 2-hour general information presentations offered by APA divisions and governance groups. Individuals must register for convention in order to attend CE sessions and must pay the unlimited CE session fee in order to claim CE credit for CE sessions attended. CE sessions are priced separately from CE workshops. Full attendance at each CE session is required to receive CE credits. No partial credit is awarded.

Does the CE Office offer credits retroactively? Can I apply as an individual to earn credit for an event that is not approved to offer CE?
