Students call for psychology-friendly legislation

A contingent of 85 psychology students participated in a two-day August workshop that taught them and 100-plus psychologists how to talk with their legislators about psychology. The students received a $50 stipend to defray the costs of attending the event, held before APA's 2005 Annual Convention and sponsored by APA's Public Policy Office and APAGS. On the first day, attendees participated in role-playing sessions in which they developed concise talking points to explain how psychologists can address the unique health and mental health needs of their home state. On day two, they visited the offices of their senators or representatives to deliver that message, as well as to ask the legislators to support psychology-friendly legislation. For example, students explained the importance of the Graduate Psychology Education Program, whose funding will be determined when Congress reauthorizes the Bureau of Health Professions this fall.
