Breakfast with psychology's championsOliva Espin, PhD, spoke to graduate students about her life and career studying the psychology of Latina, immigrant and refugee women at an APAGS-sponsored "Food for Thought" breakfast at APA's 2005 Annual Convention. Espin, a professor emerita of women's studies at San Diego State University and of psychology at Alliant University, explained that her identity as a Latina immigrant, woman and lesbian shaped her career.
"My life has been marked by immigration and change," said Espin, who was born in Cuba. That background spurred her to become a psychotherapist for immigrant women and publish books and articles about the psychology of immigration. Espin's talk was one of four breakfast meetings APAGS organized at this year's convention to give students a chance to interact with distinguished psychologists in a small, informal setting.
