Meet APAGS officer Kevin ChapmanThe September gradPSYCH story, "The voice of students," accidentally omitted L. Kevin Chapman from the list of current APAGS officers. Chapman is entering his second year as the member-at-large, practice focus, on the APAGS Executive Committee; before his election, he volunteered for three years with the APAGS Advocacy Coordinating Team (ACT), which helps students advocate for psychology-friendly legislation and voice their concerns to APAGS. He is a fourth-year clinical psychology student at the University of Louisville. Chapman's current APAGS duties include keeping practice-oriented students abreast of practice trends and information and speaking up for students' interests, such as at APA's annual practice-oriented State Leadership Conference. In his first year as the practice representative, Chapman co-edited the APAGS "Practicum Resource Guide" and collaborated with APA's Practice Directorate and APAGS to present a session at the 2005 APA Annual Convention on starting and building a practice. The speakers covered such topics as how to develop a marketing strategy, negotiate compensation and use new practice technologies effectively.
Chapman is currently working with Practice Directorate staff to add more information pertinent to graduate students to www.apapractice.org, an online resource provided by the advocacy-oriented APA Practice Organization that's free to practice-oriented APAGS members. Chapman also plans to work with his colleagues at APAGS-ACT to encourage more practice-oriented students to speak up for psychology-friendly laws and regulations. Chapman is an intern with the Jefferson County Internship Consortium in Louisville, Ky., where he works with children and adults with anxiety disorders, among other clients. He plans to continue working with this population of clients as a professional and to remain involved in public policy advocacy. To contact Chapman, e-mail him. D. SMITH BAILEY Also in APAGS News… |
