The Campaign for Grade-Level Reading (GLR)

These events and workshops will discuss the goal of getting children to read on grade level by third grade, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), trauma-informed practices and character development. The more ACEs children have experienced, such as sexual, physical, or mental abuse; violent death of a family member; divorce; substance abuse in the household, etc., the more likely they will have health and social problems growing up and into adulthood, even dying at an early age. It is also known that children who do not read on grade level by third grade are more likely to become part of the juvenile justice system, involved with drugs and criminal related activities in later life.

The three components of GLR Week 2018 include:

  • Funder Huddle (PDF, 265KB): The Funder Huddle will convene local, state and national funders supporting early literacy.
  • Community and State Leads Convening (PDF, 428KB): A series of sessions focused the next phase of work for the GLR Campaign
  • Institutes (PDF, 591KB): Educators and leaders gather to examine trauma-informed practice and character development and explore strategies to support students and families as they face adversity.
