APAGS Milestones

1988

18,000 members
• APA Council of Representatives votes unanimously for the establishment of an APA student organization.

1989 • APAGS publishes first issue of its newsletter.
• At the first APAGS midwinter meeting students choose American Psychological Association of Graduate Students (APAGS) as the group's name.
1990 • APAGS committee members attend APA boards, committees and divisional meetings, establishing liasionships with various groups, such as APA's Council of Representatives and the National Council of Schools and Programs of Professional Psychology.
1991 • APAGS becomes an ad hoc committee reporting to APA's Board of Directors.
1992 26,000 members
• APAGS establishes the first APAGS Campus Representative program to, among other goals,advocate for prescription privileges for psychologists.
1993 • APAGS obtains a full voting member seat on the Committee on Accreditation.
• It begins a liaisonship with the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers to address the decreasing number of internship sites.
1994 • A new position on the APAGS Committee is developed for research and science advocacy.
1995 • The Advocacy Coordinating Team is formed to address student concerns in the political arena.
• APAGS begins advocacy efforts on internship concerns, which leads to a new uniform notification day and the clearinghouse.
1996 31,000 members
• APAGS announces new grant program administered by APAGS-APA Committee on Ethnic Minority Affairs to sponsor regional multicultural events.
• APAGS establishes student reviewer positions for APA journals.
1997 41,000 members
• All APAGS members are eligible to present in an APAGS program at APA's Annual Convention.
• APAGS launches a Web site (www.apa.org/apags).
• APAGS becomes involved in APA's Disaster Mental Health Network through the Practice Directorate and state psychological associations.
1998 • APAGS member added to the Ethics Code Revision Task Force.
1999 • APAGS member is appointed as a representative to APA's Board of Directors.
• APAGS introduces several topical listservs for members.
2000 48,000-plus members
• Honorary Presidential Citation awarded to APAGS by APA President Pat DeLeon, PhD, JD.
• APAGS co-hosts a National Psychology Graduate Student Rally on Capitol Hill to recognize contributions of psychology research, trainees and interns.
• APAGS partners with state and provincial psychological associations.
2001 • APAGS joins APA's Advisory Committee on Colleague Assistance to help counter distress and impairment in the profession.
2002 • APAGS establishes a new Ambassador Program at convention.
2003 59,700 members
• APAGS chair serves as full voting member on APA's Council of Representatives and non-voting member on the Board of Directors.
• APAGS celebrates 15th anniversary.
• gradPSYCH magazine launches.
