Book offers internship application tips
Getting ready to apply to internship but not sure how to get started? One source
of help is an internship workbook offered annually to intern applicants through
the American Psychological Association of Graduate Students (APAGS) and published
for the first time in book format this July.
The
book"Internships in
Psychology: The APAGS Workbook for Writing Successful Applications and Finding
the Right Match"offers guidance on landing the right internship,
from filling out the uniform internship application form and calculating practicum
hours to interviewing well.
The book will replace the 20022003 internship workbook. Previous workbook
editions had served as a supplement to the annual APAGS pre-convention internship
workshop, presented at APA's Annual Conventions. The new book edition, however,
acts as a standalone in providing students with complete information on the internship
process, says Carol Williams-Nickelson, APAGS associate executive director.
"We kept it really direct with only the essential information so it's
easy for studentswhose schedules are already busy enoughto use,"
she says.
The book includes a few changes from the 20022003 edition. For example,
there's a new section featuring frequently asked questions from internship applicants.
The book also includes updates on the uniform APPIC Application for Psychology
Internships (AAPI), the computer match process, internship placement rates, practice
interview questions and tips on composing essays.
Williams-Nickelson advises students to use the internship workbook and the
Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers Web site (www.appic.org)
in tandem. There, students can download the internship application for the year
they are applying, since applications often change each year. Students applying
for internships this coming fall need to have the 20042005 AAPI.
The book, which will be updated almost every year, can be pre-ordered through
APA at www.apa.org/books/4313003.html
before the July release.
