Debt management
I was outraged after reading Dr. Flora Williams's suggestions for struggling new psychologists to supplement their incomes by waiting tables or working as store clerks ("Taking control of your finances," April gradPSYCH). One of the reasons I went to graduate school was to ensure that I would never have to wait tables again.

What about the practical and ethical implications of such an idea? If one of my clients comes into my restaurant or store as a customer, how do I explain my dual roles? How might the tipping issue be handled? It's an outrageous thought! Similarly, if an aspiring psychologist I am supervising sees me working in such a capacity, what kind of message does that send?

I am graduating with my PhD in counseling psychology this summer. I do have a job lined up, which won't be paying me a lot of money. This is, indeed, a problem. Perhaps gradPSYCH and APA should be looking at the real problems of decreasing salaries and fewer opportunities for psychologists.
