Apply for dissertation funding

drawing of money being caught in a net

APA's Science Directorate is seeking applications for its 2004 Dissertation Research Awards for students whose dissertation research reflects excellence in scientific psychology.

The grants up for grabs? Two $5,000 awards, five $3,000 awards and 25 $1,000 awards.

Dissertations may be in any area of psychological research, and all full-time psychology graduate students in accredited programs in the United States or Canada are eligible. Applicants must be either APA student affiliates or associate members, or apply for membership when applying for the grants. Graduate students who have defended their dissertations are also eligible, as long as they have not received their doctoral degree. Students must use the award money to support expenses directly related to their dissertation research, such as computer time, animal care, equipment or participant fees. Funding may not be used for tuition, travel or personal expenses.

  • A summary of the dissertation research, no longer than two pages, that includes an explanation of the research design and a research budget.
  • A curriculum vitae, no longer than two pages.
  • A one-page letter of recommendation from your academic adviser or professor.

Additional application requirements and the application form are available on the APA Science Directorate Web site at www.apa.org/science/dissinfo.html.

The application deadline is September 15. Panels of distinguished scientists will make funding recommendations to the Science Directorate. The award winners are expected to be announced in late December.
