Programming for students at APA's Annual Convention has historically been stellar. This year will be no exception, and there is still time to register. This year's convention is going to be a not-to-be-missed one for several reasons. With the setting in beautiful Hawaii, this is a great excuse to visit the islands as well as catch up on all the latest research, science and topics related to student development—not to mention the networking opportunities and the chance to meet students from all over the country. Many students that you meet become lifelong colleagues and friends, ones whom you will cherish throughout your career as a psychologist. APAGS PROGRAMMINGThe APAGS Convention Committee met in early December to review the submissions for student programming in Hawaii. We look for exceptionally high-quality content, coupled with professional delivery.
That's why we sponsor pre-convention and convention workshops aimed at helping undergraduate students apply to the right doctoral program, internship workshops, programs on the postdoc years, research- and science-oriented programs, dissertation seminars, and so on. More than likely, you'll find something about whatever you're interested in. See the complete program in this issue. OTHER OPPORTUNITIESAPAGS is once again sponsoring a "Food for Thought" breakfast several mornings at the convention. This is a wonderful way to meet eminent psychologists on an informal basis (and get a free breakfast). Space is limited, and there will be sign-up sheets for each day at the APAGS booth in the convention center. Another opportunity for students to get involved is through the APAGS Ambassador Program that started three years ago. Ambassadors are student volunteers who help other students feel more conformable at the convention and find their way to sessions and to the APAGS booth. They also help spread the word about special APAGS activities and the location of the APAGS booth and suite. This is a great opportunity for students to meet other students. For many students who are first-time convention attendees, this is something they at first may be hesitant to try. Not to worry! APAGS provides you with the training and materials you need to be a successful ambassador. The only requirement is that you be an excited student who wants to meet other students. Volunteer and become a convention insider gives all the details. Another great meeting place for students to socialize is the APAGS Suite. Several programs are scheduled at this venue. You're invited to call on us at either the APAGS exhibit booth or the suite and find out who's at the convention and what's going on. Just ask any APAGS ambassador where to find the booth. Finally, although our student years may seem like they will never end, compared with our careers as psychologists, it is a relatively short time. Use this time as a student to get as much as you can out of the APA convention. I encourage you to become an ambassador and attend the "Food for Thought" breakfasts, as many workshops as possible and the APAGS-sponsored programs. And above all, meet other students from around the country and the world because your student journey will be over before you know it. Make this year a convention year. See you in Honolulu! —Andre Vlok, MA SUBMIT PROPOSALS FOR 2005 CONVENTION IN WASHINGTONAPA's 2005 Annual Convention is slated for Washington, D.C., August 18–21. It may seem far off, but now is the time to think about presenting your work in an APAGS session! Materials must be received by APAGS by this November to be considered. By presenting your work at the APA convention, you will not only gain valuable knowledge and professional contacts, but also professional experience unlike any other available to most graduate students. APAGS follows APA rules for submissions, and has some additional unique requirements, so if you plan on presenting at APA or other major conferences in the future, this is a great way to learn the process and refine your skills.
