Clearing dissertation hurdles

surfer

Are you buried in a pile of dissertation research and stuck in the all-but-dissertation (ABD) rut? If so, attend the APA 2004 Annual Convention session, "Dissertation management: how to avoid becoming an ABD," Friday, July 29, 9:00–9:50 a.m., to learn about overcoming procrastination, working with dissertation committees and finding dissertation support groups and funding.

Among the presenters' tips:

red asterisk Anticipate expenses and identify funding resources, such as departmental fellowships, graduate school fellowships, foundations, and local and national agencies.

red asterisk Change your view of the dissertation from an overwhelming, insurmountable task to a process with a series of steps. At the session, presenters will provide suggestions for getting organized and setting realistic and manageable goals.

red asterisk Find or start a dissertation support group, which can provide encouragement, support, problem-solving help and accountability.

red asterisk Make the revision process manageable for your dissertation committee by providing committee members with one chapter to review at a time. Then, presenters suggest, make changes page by page, highlight each committee member's suggestions on the revised copy and resubmit it.

Presenters at the session will be Doris S. Johnson Browne, PhD, JoAnne Graham, PhD, and Stuart C. Tentoni, PhD, all of University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee; Melinda K. Stoops, PhD, of Framingham State College; Julanne M. Erickson, PsyD, who has an independent practice in Raleigh, N.C.; and doctoral student Cynthia De Vaney Olvey of Argosy University/Phoenix.
