APA releases new edition of career classicIn December, APA published its latest career guide for students: The second edition of “Career Paths in Psychology: Where Your Degree Can Take You.” The book, edited by former APA President Robert J. Sternberg, PhD, details 19 of the field’s most promising career paths, including five new careers since the first edition. “This edition of the book is totally updated to reflect career paths in psychology of this decade, rather than the last,” says Sternberg. Each chapter’s author provides personal insights into their chosen psychology niche and the personal attributes that contribute to psychologists’ success in each career path. The book also summarizes each field’s advantages and disadvantages, how to prepare for it, typical job duties and financial compensation.
Contributors include Henry L. Roediger III, PhD, on academic careers; Melba J.T. Vasquez, PhD, on counseling psychology; Judith S. Blanton, PhD, on consulting psychology; and Kelly D. Brownell, PhD, and Peter Salovey, PhD, on health psychology. Some of the new and substantially revised paths the book covers: working in medical schools, clinical neuropsychology, academic administration, careers in government, managed-care careers, and jobs in educational and psychological testing organizations. —D.
