Run for an APAGS office
Interested in a leadership position with the American Psychological Association
of Graduate Students (APAGS)? Students can apply for the following open positions,
which begin this fall:
Chair-elect,
who serves as an APAGS spokesperson, a member of APA's Council of Representatives,
an ex-officio member of the APAGS subcommittees and a liaison to APA governance
groups. The chair-elect serves in this position for one year to prepare him or
her to become APAGS chair the following year. The APAGS chair presides over the
APAGS committee and serves as an ex-officio member of APA's Board of Directors,
the APAGS voting member of APA's Council of Representatives and an ex-officio
member of APAGS subcommittees.
Member-at-large,
general focus, who develops student initiatives and outreach programs for
general psychology issues.
Member-at-large,
research/academic focus, who oversees the APAGS scholarship process and
promotes activities for research-oriented graduate students.
Member-at-large,
diversity focus, who develops initiatives and programs that support diverse
students, such as older students and those with disabilities.
Students can also apply for the following APAGS subcommittee positions:
Chair,
Committee on Ethnic Minority Affairs (CEMA), who oversees grant allocation
programs for regional multicultural events and develops programs for ethnic-minority
students.
Chair,
Convention Committee, who works with APAGS to develop program themes and
review proposals.
Chair,
Committee for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Concerns, who
advocates and develops initiatives to advance the interests of LGBT students.

APAGS members will be able to vote online for these positions at the APAGS Web
site March 22 through April 16. Paper ballots will be available
by request.

Get a friend to join APAGS and win a prize
Recruit your peers to become APAGS members during the month of February, and
you can win a $250 American Express travel gift check if you recruit the most
new graduate student affiliates to APAGS. The second-place winner will receive
a PDA, the third-place winner will get a $100 stipend, and three fourth-place
winners will have their registration fees waived to APA's 2004 Annual Convention
in Honolulu, July 28August 1. The first 400 students to get three students
to become APAGS members will also receive a free copy of the Publication
Manual of the American Psychological Association: Fifth Edition (APA, 2001).

Nominations due for outstanding state association
State and Provincial Psychological Associations (SPPAs) that have demonstrated
excellence in promoting graduate student development and joint APAGS/SPPA membership
are eligible for the Outstanding State or Provincial Psychological Association
of the Year award. The winning association will receive $1,500.
APAGS, the Committee for the Advancement of Professional Practice and Division
31 (State Psychological Association Affairs) present the award each year to honor
a state or provincial association. The Ohio Psychological Association received
the award last year.

Submit papers for 2004 Graduate Student Ethics Prize
APA's Ethics Committee and APAGS are accepting empirical or theoretical papers
on psychology and ethics in relation to science or research, practice, education,
public interest, or the theory of ethics for this year's Graduate Student Ethics
Prize. The winner to be announced May 15 will win $1,000, a round-trip
ticket to APA's 2004 Annual Convention in Honolulu and three nights of hotel accommodations.
The winner will also present his or her paper during the Honolulu convention.
The submission deadline is March 5. Submit papers
to APA's Office of Ethics (attn: Ethics Prize) at the APA address. For more information,
